This is a very popular trio that has just launched their last album called: “Fade”. I am talking about the indie rock band Yo La Tengo. This is a band that has always tried to break typical musical stereotypes, while protecting the authenticity of their compositions. Whether you are just looking to hear something different or you are already a fan of this group from New Jersey, you have an appointment on the first of March at 21 hrs. at Aula Magna in Lisbon.

Having the chance to attend a live performance of “Yo la tengo” is a privilege you won’t have everyday. Georgia Hubley, Ira Kaplan and James Mc New founded the band in 1984, in Hoboken – New Jersey and since then, they have become part of the American alternative rock-pop history. This month, you will have the opportunity to enjoy “Fade”, which is their last album that will be presented, along with their most famous hits from the 80s like “Ride the Tiger”, in a magnificent live concert in the capital of Portugal. After a long absence, their previous album was produced in 2008, the trio returns to the stages with an album that expresses a mature facet of their music, which contains deeper feelings that will definitively move you. They are stronger and full of energy, added to the fact they have been together since the 80s.

It is interesting that this American band ended up having a Spanish name. The story, of course, has to do with a very popular sport in the States: baseball. In 1962, a New York Mets player was continually colliding with his teammates and every time he ran after the ball he shouted: “Yo la tengo”, which means “I got it”. Once he collided with one of his teammates who did not speak Spanish and asked him what it meant. And he, trying to pronounce the word with American accent, has said “Yellow Tango”. This story was so funny for the band members that they’ve decided to name their band after this humorous incident.

Yo la tengo concerts are a perfect fusion between a great show and a unique interaction with the audience. At the concerts we will hear great indie rock songs that can only be compared with bands such as Dinosaur Jr and Sonic Youth. These guys have also composed for some films. In 2001 they played the soundtrack of a short documentary called “The Sounds of Sounds of Science” and in 2005 they composed the soundtrack of the independent film “Junebug” directed by Phil Morrison. For the Simpsons lovers, among whom I include myself, the group took over the sixth chapter of the tenth season.

Yo la tengo is on a world tour. They just finished their tour in the USA and Canada, and now they head to Europe. Their first concert will take place in Portugal (Lisbon and Porto), and then they’ll go to Spain (first to Santiago de Compostela on the 4th of March, and then to Madrid and Barcelona on the 5th and the 6th). From Spain they’ll fly to Switzerland, Italy and Germany.
